In sports, all things are controversial. Retiring athlete jerseys is no different. Some jersey wholesalers specialize in offering retired jerseys because of their special meaning, but wholesale jerseys are greatly popular with sports fans long before honorary retirements are on the agenda.

Retiring a jersey is an ancient tradition intended to celebrate an athlete’s career. That’s what gets the disputes going. What, exactly, deserves the recognition? Some franchises have specific requirements and some seem to decide based on a coin toss. Statistics obviously serve a part; an athlete has to have shown a high level of quality and achievement. Awards are another criterion. Gaining an Olympic gold assists in elevating the player’s status. Team track record counts, too: while a talented athlete who has consistently been on a losing team may still be recognized with a retirement ceremony, it certainly helps if the team has performed well.

Other standards come into play also. relationship is one of them. Connection to the team and to the town through philanthropic deeds and involvement are vital. softer values are inherent in the decision to hoist a jersey into therafters: atheletes may simply be adored by the locals and “terrific people” as well as superlative performers. Sometimes, a athlete’s biography motivates the team to take a jersey out of play. Overcoming adversity or demise at the height of a career can result in retiring the jersey, to be forever honored but never played.

These different criteria, however, are an aspect of the source for controversy. Which athlete is chosen and when may seem to be determined willy- nilly. Some NFL teams have retired one or two numbers and some have retired more than adozen. The NBA looks the same way. Women’s teams have very rarely retired a jersey and then, only in recent times. Alana Beard from Duke was the first female at the school to have her basketball jersey honored and that did not occur until 2004.

What else bugs people about this practice? Jersey wholesalers could telltales of sports figures who rejected having their numbers retired and whose wholesale jersey sales were bigger when the jerseys were active. Some want to see their own record of achievement go on and are proud to view their jerseys and their numbers played by others in the league. Some have proposed celebrating the jerseys but letting the numbers be used, a compromise that might work. Some columnists and fans dislike the entire system and think numbers and achievement should be honor enough.

Retirement ceremonies are probably going to continue. Sports mean controversies in all events. It might as well include the innocuous jersey. Jersey wholesalers, retailers, speciality shops and wholesale jerseys onlinesales will enjoy the trend and in the end, so will most sports enthusiasts.
